Message from The Chairman - John Seymour

John Seymour The Chairman's View

Dear Members

On what was not the hottest day we have seen, Stan Howard, wife Linda, my wife Anne and myself arrive at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Loughborough for the eighth reunion of 260 Signal Squadron knowing only that it would be a weekend to remember, they do get better every year.

On arrival we were met by our main man and wife the Secretary Geoff Scott and the power behind the throne his wife Beryl, also the Webmaster Archie Cairns and his wife Hilda. Slowly but surely the lads and their wives began arriving from all corners of the globe as far away as Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Belgium and Germany to mention just a few.

Our reunion this year was a little special as we were honoured by the presence of the Chairman of the Royal Signals Association Major General Boyle CB and his good lady Anna, who may I say are two of the nicest, good humoured people you could wish to meet and they have an open invitation to attend our reunions anytime and we don't hand them out willy nilly.

Friday was as normal taken up with meeting old pals and looking through the many photographs our members had brought with them plus the hundreds our Webmaster has managed to accumulate. As the lads drifted off to bed, my only thought was that Friday's don't get much better and that we are a Band of Brothers.

Saturday was taken up by the usual full English breakfast, followed by the annual trip round Loughborough market looking for the really silly prizes for our raffle this is always a great source of income for the association.

The main event this weekend was the laying up of the old Squadron Standard and Dedication of the new one. This was scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1600 hrs. As we all gathered at All Saints Church for the Service, our Standard was carried in by our Standard Bearer, Archie Cairns escorted by John Townson and Chris Conroy, and finally handed over to Canon Derek Major Buxton by our President Major Bill Cunningham.

The service was superb and the singing of the hymns like Jerusalem just go to show there is life in old soldiers no matter what people say. Photos were taken, thanks were given and we all returned to the hotel for the AGM where decisions are taken about our future, and this time there was a major one (no pun intended). Major Bill Cunningham decided that now was the right time to stand down. He has been our President since our formation in 1998 and a first class job he has done. Bill's speech brought a few tears to the eye but also plenty of laughter, he took us all out to Ireland but the main thing is he brought us all back and everyone walked off the plane. There was a tumultuous round of applause followed by three hearty cheers. Replacing Bill was not easy but I believe along with everyone who attended that we have a top replacement in Stan Howard so rest assured things will remain the same and all you missing members come and join us to experience the things I am talking about. At the end of the AGM we all retired to get ready for the evening meal this is the highlight of the weekend and believe it or not the atmosphere is something to be experienced.

Sunday is not only a day of rest it is also the day for members to drink a fizzy tablet in a glass of water , some packing their bags and leaving others stopping over until Monday but I can honestly say that I feel very proud to say that these people are my friends, and so finally may I wish Bill Cunningham all the very best for the future, Stan and Linda Howard many thanks for a great holiday and many thanks to Stan for taking over the helm of 260 Signal Squadron, we will support you. Thanks to Archie Cairns for his tireless work was Webmaster and most of all to Geoff & Beryl for their amazing amount of work throughout the year it really is appreciated by everyone.

So my friends until the 28 - 30 of April 2006 in Leicester be good, be kind and may your God go with you. I'M PROUD TO BE YOUR CHAIRMAN

John Seymour
